Body = A beautiful and impressive memorial to the great Irish tenor,
Josef Locke, was unveiled in Derry Northern Ireland today. The memorial
designed by Terry Quigley, and created by artistic sculptor Maurice
Harron, is a fitting tribute to the late singer who stole the hearts
of millions
with his wonderful voice.
The movie, “Hear
My Song”, starring Ned Beatty, brought Josef’s extraordinary
life to the attention of a mass audience, accelerating sales of
the CD of the same name. Composer and pianist Phil Coulter, and
John Hume, a well known politician, and many more important people
were at the ceremony. Josef’s extraordinary tenor voice, and
the mischievous glint in his twinkling Irish eyes, won the admiration
of music lovers everywhere. The writer is happy to admit to playing
a small part in the realisation of the Josef
Locke memorial by getting the media in Ireland, north and south,
to cover the Josef Locke statue campaign throughout 2003 and 2004.
