User-Lab to Run Web Accessibility Training for Managers
User-Lab to Run Web Accessibility Training for CEOs, CIOs, IT Managers and Webmasters
----Begins----
User-Lab, not-for profit, design and research centre http://www.user-lab.com, is
organising a web accessibility training event at its lab at the Birmingham Institute
of Art & Design (BIAD) http://www.biad.uce.ac.uk/ in Birmingham.
The event, entitled Web Accessibility Training, will be held on 23 June, 2005 and
run from 10:00 until 16:00. It is designed to arm IT managers and webmasters with
the knowledge and practical skills needed to evaluate and specify website
accessibility. On completion of the day delegates will be issued with an
academically recognised certificate of attendance.
John Knight, Director at User-Lab explains, “This training provides a unique
combination of technical expertise, legal insight and cutting edge research.
Trainers include experts from the private, public and academic sectors who have a
wealth of experience in accessibility. User-Lab has run successful accessibility
events over the last four years, with unanimous positive feedback on the quality of
training provided. Previous attendees include representatives of the Office of The
Prime Minister and the Birmingham City Council.”
The Web Accessibility Training event will include a technical overview of the
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), a demonstration of auditing tools and access
technology, guidelines for specifying site builds and quality tips and checkpoints.
At the end of the training, delegates will be able to specify, manage and audit
sites in compliance with the DDA.
Website owners will receive a free Accessibility Toolkit when they subscribe to this
one day training event.
John Knight continues, “Accessibility and the DDA go a lot deeper than people
realise. It asks organisations to consider users and make 'reasonable adjustments'.
It’s important that website owners understand that an accessible website does not
make an organisation compliant. They need to consider their policy and procedures
as a whole and how their website fits into their overall commercial offering. This
is where User-Lab and training events such as this one can make a real and tangible
difference.”
The training is provided in conjunction with Royal National Institute of the Blind
(RNIB) and ECOTEC Research & Consulting and The Centre for Accessible Environments.
