June 10, 2005: Billions of gallons of waste fluids are produced
annually in the course of routine repair and maintenance operations
in industrial and automotive settings. Specialized machines, called
cabinet washers, use heated
degreasing solutions which become mixed with grease, oil and other
contaminants during cleaning. Innovative technology from ChemFree
Corporation applies cutting-edge science to neutralize contaminants
while they are still inside the cabinet washer, which reduces the
amount of waste fluid by about two thirds. “We are approaching
an old and necessary process in a new way, one that just makes more
sense,” said Tom McNally, Vice President of ChemFree.
Contaminants
in ChemFree’s cleaning solution are neutralized through a
process called bioremediation. Safe, naturally occurring microbes
release enzymes that break apart hydrocarbons to free carbon as
a food source, physically purifying the cleaning solution. Under
traditional methods, cleaning solutions become saturated with greases
and oils, quickly becoming ineffective. Once saturated, the contaminated
liquids must be hauled away by specially licensed waste handlers.
Bioremediation allows the cleaning solution to last much longer
before it must be removed. ChemFree is currently developing an additional
treatment system for cabinet washers, which would treat and reuse
spent cleaning solutions, eliminating the waste stream entirely.
ChemFree Corporation,
patent holders for this breakthrough technology and manufacturers
of the revolutionary SmartWasher brand of parts washers, introduced
the SmartWasher/Magido line of automated spray cabinet washers this
year. These
premium quality stainless steel machines are designed to be safer
to operate, conserve energy, and reduce waste without sacrificing
effectiveness or value. “More than ever, organizations are
looking for innovations that allow them to operate more
responsibly” adds McNally. “But innovations are not
practical if they are expensive or hard to use. We have developed
a product that merges environmental responsibility with the things
that businesses have always sought, like cost effectiveness, safety,
productivity, and durability.”
Reduced waste
streams are not the only benefit of this next-generation approach.
SmartWasher/Magido cabinet washers are designed with energy conservation
in mind. “The chemistry in our cleaning solution is so advanced
that we are able to clean
quickly and effectively while operating at temperatures about a
third less than the typical cabinet washer” reports Don Makaruk,
ChemFree’s product manager, “and since we are able to
remove contaminants from our cleaning solution, our machines are
designed with reservoirs that are about 70% smaller than comparable
machines. Heating much less liquid to a lower temperature consumes
a lot less energy, about 75% less than the other guys.”
