Local TN Student Presents National History Day Project at
Smithsonian American Art Museum

(Knoxville, TN ) - June 3, 2005) -- Visitors to the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum will see history come alive when Daniel Jordan presents the TN First Place Junior Group Documentary on Wednesday, June 15. This young history scholar from St. John Neumann Catholic School will present his group's work reflecting this year’s National History Day theme “Communication: The Key to
Understanding” between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on the first floor of the Museum.

Daniel Jordan is [one]of nine students selected to present their projects at the museum and are part of a larger group of more than 2,000 finalists participating in the National History Day (NHD) national contest at the University of Maryland June 12-16. Daniel, along with his partner Tyler Sexton created a documentary entry on "Sequoyah's Syllabary: The Key to Communication for the Cherokee". Mr. Jordan, as group team leader will present the documentary at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The NHD program annually engages more than half a million participants in grades six through 12 from 49 states, the District of Columbia, and American Samoa.
“Participating in NHD has really taught me to be thorough about my research,” said Daniel Jordan. “ The entire process of National History Day is a great experience
and I am really honored to show our project at the Smithsonian.”

More than a student competition, NHD is a campaign to change the teaching and learning of history in our nation’s classrooms. The program is having a profound impact on education and received the Charles Frankel Prize for Public Programming from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through publications and education programs, NHD trains teachers to move students beyond textbooks and expand their classrooms to include libraries, museums and archives. The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum is dedicated to exhibiting American crafts from the 19th to the 21st century. The Renwick is located
