A few days ago,
on the 8th July 2005, “The Times”, of London gave the,
“Elvis Presley International Airport, Memphis”, a mention.
A story also covered on many
Memphis and Tennessee news web-pages.
Heartening,
considering the upcoming 28th Anniversary of Elvis’s death
next month, will be covered by the media around globe, once again.
Elvis Presley
not only put himself on the world stage, he put Memphis firmly on
the map!
The proposal
for an Elvis Airport was first publicised by wily Scott Shepard
in the “Memphis Business Journal” 2001, it raised a
few eyebrows in the Memphis media back then.
A couple of
years later Memphis WMC TV5 took up the story and even ran a poll
in which the idea for an Elvis Presley International Airport received
more than 75% of the vote.
Considering
we already have a John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Louis Armstrong and
John Lennon Airport, why do the airport authorities in Shelby County
Memphis deny Elvis such an honour? Hundreds of millions around the
world are looking on, quite
mystified!
Recently on
the, “100 Greatest Americans”, Poll on the Discovery
Channel, Martin Luther King, and Elvis Presley were included in
the top ten names chosen.
Therefore failing
an Elvis Airport why not, “The King International Airport,
Memphis”. The City owes both men recognition.
