Summary = Many studies indicated that the painkiller Vioxx doubled
patients’ risk of heart attack and strokes, the drug was pulled
off the market in September 2004. However, the damage had already
been done.
Press Release
Body = September 14, 2005 – After a recent $253.4 million
wrongful death settlement against Vioxx drug maker Merck, more and
more patients’ began learning about the negligence of these
pharmaceutical companies and are now choosing to make their voices
heard.
Soon after the
release of Vioxx, studies indicated that the use of the drug could
lead to an elevated risk of cardiovascular problems. The FDA speculates
that during the five years Vioxx was on the market, there may have
been between 88,000 – 139,000 heart attacks of which 30-40%
were fatal.
Vioxx causes
heart attacks because it affects chemicals in inflamed tissues similar
to what the kidneys use to regulate blood. After the impurities
are filtered through the kidneys, they are sent back into the circulatory
system. When this very delicate system becomes out of alignment,
it can cause a drop in blood pressure which ultimately starts the
chain of events leading to a heart attack.
Many of the
patients who have suffered a Vioxx heart attack are now turning
to qualified Vioxx lawyers to get help.
