Powwow Returns to Moorpark, California

After an absence of eight years, the Children of Many Colors Native American Intertribal Powwow will return to Moorpark College
on June 16, 17 and 18, 2006.

Hosted by Redbird, a Native American non profit organization founded in 1994 in Simi Valley, California, the Children of Many Colors Powwow is the signature event for which Redbird has become known.

Powwows are Native American gatherings which the public is welcome and invited to attend. They include traditional and contemporary styles of song and dance, indigenous foods, crafts and artwork, story telling and educational displays. The 2006 powwow will include exhibition dances by native Hawaiians, Coastal and Alaskan tribes, and the Chumash, who were the principle inhabitants of Ventura
County for countless generations. There will also be plenty of intertribal dances, where visitors are allowed to come into the arena and experience for themselves the powerful rhythms of the traditional drums and their beautiful songs.
Also in attendance will be such education and health service groups as the American Red Cross Bone Marrow Donors and United American Indian Involvement. Because
Redbird has a keen interest in the education and welfare of native and non-native peoples, a number of other service organizations are always invited to attend.

History

The theme for Redbird’s powwow was inspired by the words of Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan of the Onondaga (Iroquois) nation. During a speech at Claremont College in 1995, Lyons stated “Every woman is a mother, and every man an uncle, to every child, no matter what color they are.” Those words resounded with Corina
Roberts, Redbird’s founder, as they exemplify the attitude of the indigenous community toward children and the coming generations.

Native people have managed to a large degree to maintain their individual tribal cultures despite hundreds of years of oppression and intermarriage with other ethnic groups. Lyons, speaking to a group of Indian and non-Indian people, expressed his concern and opinion that we are all responsible for the education and fate of the generations to come, regardless of what nationality or religious background our
children hail from.

Moorpark College was home to the 1996 and 1997 gatherings. The first two powwows, in 1994 and 1995, were held at Peters’ Arabian Ranch, but the event quickly outgrew the property and was moved to Moorpark College. After the untimely death of several Board Members, the event was “put to sleep” for seven years. There was even talk
that there would never be another Redbird powwow. However, the lasting joyful memories of the four previous powwows prompted Roberts to bring the gathering back in 2004 to Castaic Lake in Los Angeles County. While the 2004 gathering was a success, there were many challenges to overcome with the location.

The decision was made to seek other locations shortly after the 2004 powwow, but it seemed unlikely that there would still be room at the college, with the recent expansion of the athletic fields. Roberts was overjoyed to learn from Dave Leyba of Moorpark College that there was indeed still room, and that the college welcomed Redbird back.

Goals

One of Redbird’s main objectives is the creation of Redbird Ranch, an elder and transitional housing facility for Native American elders and their care giving families as they near their end of life phase. Redbird Ranch will provide a culturally sensitive and appropriate setting for these families during this difficult period.

It will be a place where modern and traditional healing ways can co-exist in a comfortable, familiar atmosphere, and where elders can approach the final stage of life with peace and dignity. The American Indian community is among the least well represented in the field of health programs and housing. Redbird Ranch will provide a model for urban Indian housing and healthcare. The group is currently seeking
support for this venture, which they see as the most important and meaningful contribution they can make to the native community.

Support

To support these projects, Redbird recently joined eScrip, an electronic service which allows merchants to contribute to non profit groups on behalf of their patrons. By registering store loyalty cards and ATM cards with eScrip, individuals can contribute to Redbird every time they shop with an eScrip merchant, such as Vons, Macy’s, Aamco Transmission, Claim Jumper and many others. The contribution is
made electronically and automatically by the merchant, based on the amount of purchase. During the month of September, Vons has increased their contribution amount from 1% to 10% on selected items, to help support schools and children’s organizations who are eScrip members. There is no charge for registering with this service.
