Press Release Summary = The harmful effects of synthetic dye & chemicals used at the time of dyeing have forced us to concern about the alternative preparation of dye using natural sources. Until the invention of synthetic dye“Perkin Mauve” (1856), people are using natural sources like stem, bark, leaves etc for dyeing clothes. Nowadays people are concerned about harmful effect of using synthetic dye & going for natural dye inspite of synthetic dye. In India, West Bengal is the fourth position to cultivate flowers after Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka & Tamilnadu. But a huge amount of unsold flowers are wasted everyday in West Bengal. These unsold flowers create a big problem for disposal as well as these can create environment pollution also. But these unsold flowers can be used for dyeing purpose for Textile & residuals can be used as bio-fertilizers also. These flower dyes are eco-friendly also and it has no side effect on skin. An attempt has been made in laboratory scale and in pilot plant also using some selected flowers like Mari-gold, China rose etc for dyeing of textile fiber to get a clear idea of preparation of dye from these flowers & using it in Textile Industry and making the process economically viable.

Press Release Body = Natural dye is used to colour materials from the ancient times until the invention of synthetic dye (1856). But most of the synthetic dyes are toxic, create allergic action to skin, and pollutes our environment during the time of production of dye. Due to health hazards associated with the use of synthetic dyes, natural dye lead to the revival of synthetic dye. These floral dyes are eco-friendly & have no side effect i.e. allergic action on skin.

A survey reports reveals that among India, west Bengal is 4th position to cultivate flower. But 60% of the total flowers are sold & 40% of it remain as unsold & these flowers are felt which can create environmental pollution. But the wasted colour flowers can be used to extract dye from it for colouring the textile fiber. The process of extraction is easy & village unemployed people can also do the job & it can be source of their income for their survival. Not only that, depending on it, large scale Industry also can be set up.

Our research work is undertaken to find out the utilization of these wasted, unsold flowers to extract dye from it, and use these dye to colour the fiber of cotton, silk & wool. The main objective of our work is to find out a possible effective procedure to extract dye from flower, get different shades using different mordants, optimization of the dyeing methods and evaluate if the procedure is cost-effective or not.

Dye are extracted from flowers by aqueous medium with a appropriate proportion of flower-water ratio maintaining a fixed temperature. After the extraction, the coloured dye are separated from flowers and used for colouring fiber. Before dyeing, fibers are mordanted using different eco-friendly chemicals used as mordant for getting different colourful shades on cloth. Dyeing is carried out at a fixed temperature for 1-2 hour, and then dried and allowed to aged for fixed times. It is then soaped with mild detergents at room temperature flowed by rinsing. Research is undergoing for further improvement of fastness properties and other related properties. A pilot plant is set up depending on our experiment carried out in lab scale.
