Press Release Body = On Dec 5th, the Honorable Patricia Mahan, Mayor of Santa Clara, and John Stiffler, a representative of the Red Cross, visited the Delphi Academy of San Francisco Bay to acknowledge the students for raising money to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
After learning about Hurricane Katrina, the students in the Delphi Academy Middle School current events class, along with their teacher Sarah Paradise, decided to do something about it by getting the school involved and helping the Red Cross raise money. In the end, the school raised $900 dollars to benefit those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The Mayor of Santa Clara and Red Cross Representative were invited to Delphi Academy to meet the middle school class that had set up the fund raiser. They were greeted by the Director of Admissions, Maria Agrillo, and introduced to the Headmistress, Nancy Hawkins, and the current events teacher, Sarah Paradise.
The Mayor and Red Cross Representative were toured through the classrooms collecting the money raised by each class. They started with the Beginners 1 class and were delighted when they were greeted with hugs from the kindergarten students.
Each class presented the Mayor with what they had collected. She was really impressed with the children's manners. She thanked each class sincerely and made sure to tell them "the money would really help the Katrina victims."
The middle school students were ready at the end of the tour with warm cider and cookies. They were able to ask the Mayor and Red Cross Representative questions. The class was interested to know how many local schools had participated in raising money and which school had raised the most. To their surprise, the Mayor responded that she thought "Delphi had collected the most funds!" The children were delighted to have such important people come to Delphi, and they were happy to know they had contributed the most.
When asked about the experience, two students had the following to say:
"When we first started this project, we went from class to class promoting it. Everyone was so excited. It was great. I feel that we have made a really good product to help the Katrina Victims. We also felt proud to have Mayor Patricia Mahan and the Red Cross Representative thank us"-Melissa Agrillo, M/S student.
"Just the fact that we were helping people in New Orleans was fantastic. I really like New Orleans a lot, and I think it's a gorgeous place and what happened was awful. We found a way to help. This project was called Change for Change. It was an awesome idea, and I hope our time and money will go far and help the victims."-Kelly Rai, M/S student.
