Rancho Mirage, CA David Sevel, M.D., PhD., F.A.C.S., F.R.C.S., F.R.C.O., an internationally recognized ophthalmologist and medical researcher, passed away from lymphoma on March 1, 2006 in Rancho Mirage, California at age 72. The South African born Sevel, whose career spanned posts in Europe, South Africa and California, was a renowned research pioneer whose contributions advanced modern day ophthalmology in the areas of embryonic ophthalmic pathology, ocular plastic surgery, and treatment of ocular muscle abnormalities. As a professor, he authored 96 scientific articles and contributed to ophthalmic textbooks and was a featured guest speaker at conferences worldwide.
Sevel's professional honors included the Diploma of Ophthalmology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in England, selection as a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons, and, election to the prestigious American Ophthalmological Society. Sevel was a member of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmologists.
Sevel attended medical school at the University of Witswatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Following graduate studies at Oxford University in England, and the Institute of Ophthalmology in London Sevel received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of London. His thesis focused on the ophthalmologic complications of rheumatoid arthritis. In 1969, Sevel was appointed Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. This made him, at the age of 35, the youngest professor and chairman ever appointed to the medical faculty. In 1979 he moved to San Diego to become Chairman of Ophthalmology at the University of California Medical School, San Diego. From 1988 to 1998 Sevel served as Chairman and Head of the Ophthalmology Division of Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA.
Sevel was committed to his work and patients to the extent that when asked about his hobbies, he said "ophthalmology and my patients are my life, my passion and my hobby." He was also a keen rugby fan and had an avid interest in collecting antique prints, maps and old books.
Sevel is survived by his wife Golda, son Charl Sevel, daughter Nicola Jeffrey, and one grandson, Charles. During his retirement he lived in France, England and Rancho Mirage, CA.
