Press Release Summary = MSNBC primetime fertility special follow three couples through in vitro fertilization and raises some questions addressed by recognized reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia.
Press Release Body = [West Columbia, SC]-[June 19, 2006]- On Monday night, June 18th, a primetime program on MSNBC turned the spotlight on fertility clinics and their patients. Three couples were followed: one with challenges from endometriosis, another with male factor and female ovulation issues and a third couple dealing with father time and trying to get pregnant later in life.
For the male factor couple, a recognized expert reports that the incidence of male factor is particularly high in the Southeast. "Many factors play a role in the increased rate but, at the same time, we\'re consistently improving our ability to successfully treat these couples," says Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia, founder and medical director of Advanced Fertility & Reproductive Endocrinology Institute in South Carolina.
Older couples and couples that have been turned away by some clinics still have options. "We routinely see women near the end of the reproductive age range. We also see patients with high FSH levels that have been told they can not achieve pregnancy. It gives us great satisfaction when we are able to achieve successful pregnancies with these patients," added Dr. Whitman Elia. "The older couple on the show that utilized a donated egg wanted a local donor with a known history. But another challenge for egg recipients is the cost. Egg brokers can inflate the end price to more than double the level we have at our clinic. Lower cost of living, a large population of higher education women, and our own database of donors give us the opportunity to offer donated eggs at more reasonable investment levels."
Whitman-Elia also reports that the science and monitoring techniques for in vitro fertilization have improved to the point where her clinic is seeing reductions in multiple births. "Most often we are able to pinpoint the right eggs and the right number of them to transfer to ensure a healthy pregnancy and live birth," she states.
Additional experience and research is proving that other ancillary therapies add to success rates. Dr Whitman-Elia adds, "We\'re fortunate to have a PhD psychologist, certified through Harvard\'s Mind/Body program that coaches our patients into the best-possible mental state-of-mind. We also offer well-researched holistic therapies, such as acupuncture, scientifically shown to increase the likelihood of a successful IVF therapy."
