\"He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it.\" -Douglas Adams
I\'ve always wondered why it\'s such a compliment to hear \"You\'re always in my dreams. I mean, that\'s a little scary, right? Stalker-wise, that is. In Gabriel Garcia Marquez\'s One Hundred Years of Solitude, the whole town was so plagued with insomnia that everyone began to see each other\'s dreams. That's what scientists have always dreamed of, right?
But, really, it\'s good that we all dream. After all, we spend a third of our lives asleep. Can you imagine yourself simply lying on bed with closed eyes and a dead brain? I know I can\'t. Because hey, we are all stuntpersons and lead actors in our dreams. We get to wrestle one-eyed monsters, or battle giant rabbits, disable time bombs, or put our mother-in-laws on mute. How cool is that?
According to Freud, dreams are simply manifestations of our wishes. Our unconscious wants those wishes fulfilled wholly, but of course the preconscious, self-censoring part of us won\'t allow it. Thus our dreams become disguised just to strike a compromise between our ego and id. Whatever it is, our dreams, especially recurring ones, are always telling us something. Rabbits are good luck, magic carpets mean we are overcoming our life's obstacles, bathrooms mean we want to cleanse ourselves, and mother-in-laws are, well...
Not all of us remember our entire dream sequence for the night. It's a good habit upon waking up to try remembering your dreams the previous night so you know what you're unconscious have been up to. Or else we would forget the whole thing forever. You never know when your unconscious is telling you something important.
And oh, the next time someone tells you you\'re always in their dreams, tell them to at least wait for you to brush your teeth.
