Mr. Reznik became interested in gambling and video gambling addiction in 1992
because clients with gambling addiction problems asked for his services. The
material in this book is based on his knowledge of applied and experimental
psychology, his review of the relevant literature, his observations and interviews
with players at video gambling machines (electronic slot machines), in-depth
investigation of clients who were pathological gamblers, and discussions of gambling
with professionals and concerned citizens.

In this book Mr. Reznik attempts to answer what is pathological gambling, how did
this behaviour originate, what maintains and reinforces this behaviour and how can
this addiction be treated? This book is divided into three sections. In the first
section he discusses pathological gambling and related issues. In the second
section, he presents various hypotheses or theories pertaining to the etiology and
possible causes of pathological gambling. In the third section which is a self-help
program for a person with pathological gambling, he lists suggestions regarding what
can be done about this disorder.

Dr. Yair Reznik graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology, from Sir
George Williams University. He holds an M.A. from Dalhousie University and a Ph.D.
from the University of Alberta. He has extensive clinical experience having worked
as a psychologist for the Department of Mental Health of Prince Edward Island,
Halifax County Regional Rehabilitation Center and in his own private clinical
practice. He retired in 1996.
