Press Release Body = West Michigan opponents of the Coast Guard Plan to establish "Live Fire" zones in the Great Lakes are inviting the public to a "brainstorming session" to discuss means to ensure environmental protection of our water without compromising security on the Great Lakes. The Coast Guard recently completed its public comment sessions on this question. Twenty four live fire exercises were apparently conducted on the Great Lakes this past summer before citizens became aware of the practice.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at the Spring Lake, Michigan Holiday Inn at 6:30 p.m. Special guest speaker will be Duluth Environmental Attorney Marc Fink. On behalf of "Citizens For Environmental Enforcement" in Duluth, Attorney Fink has sent a Notice of Intent to the Coast Guard to file a Clean Water Citizens Act lawsuit over the discharge of tons of lead and other contaminants into the Great Lakes from these live fire exercises. Attorney Fink will discuss this and other options available to the public.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Additional details and future meetings will be available on the website, http://www.keeptheleadout.org or by calling (800) 727-1470.
