About the Author: Barbara Spencer was born in Bowdon in Cheshire and grew up and went to school in Birmingham. She's lived in the West Indies, and in Grenada, Athens and Beirut before returning to Britain in 1977 and giving birth to her daughter, Melissa, in 1980. As her daughter is an avid swimmer, Barbara became involved with the running of Street & District Swimming Club and also became a qualified Swimming Teacher, Timekeeper and Judge. Determined to become a successful writer, Barbara took early retirement and now writes full-time for both the 6 - 10 age group and teens.
Excerpt from the book:
"One morning, Patch was still lying half-asleep - even though the sun had been up for ages - when a boy walked past. Seeing the puppy curled up under the hedge, he picked up a stone and threw it - hard. The stone hit Patch on the head and he woke with a shock and jumped up. 'Hey, stop that,' he shouted. The boy took no notice. Instead he looked round for something else to throw and picked up a jagged piece of concrete, which struck the puppy on his leg." That was that, he couldn\'t fight boys with stones. Patch turned and ran off as fast as his three legs would carry him."
