It\'s been 20 years since Kevin Sutherland found himself on the PGA Tour, and thus far in 2007, the 42-year-old may be having his best season on Tour. The Californian continued his strong play at the first round of the AT&T Classic at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., Thursday, as he shot a 7-under 65 to take the lead into round two.
Sutherland, who ranks No. 44 on the PGA Tour money list with more than $800,000 in the bank due to making 10 out of 13 cuts and two top-10 finishes, recorded eight birdies on his way to taking a two-shot lead of Ryuji Imada of Japan, Stephen Marino, Tommy Armour III, Bob May and Craig Kanada, who all shot 67.
\"You\'re not going to shoot 65s very often, so it was a lot of fun. The course is in great shape and the weather is perfect,\" Sutherland told reporters after the round. \"The ball is really running down these fairways so you can get to the par 5s, and I took advantage of all four of them today.\"
Sutherland found himself in the bunker at 16, but holed the shot to begin a finishing run of three consecutive birdies.
\"It was a fairly easy bunker shot, but to hole it was a bonus. That kind of got me going,\" said Sutherland, whose sole PGA Tour victory came at the 2002 Accenture Match Play Championship. \"All of a sudden I birdied 17, hit a wedge in to about five feet, and knocked it on the green in two on 18 and two-putt for birdie there, and all of a sudden I shot 4-under on the front. It kind of adds up fast when they come in bunches like that.\"
Mark Brooks led a group three shots off the pace at 68, while Stewart Cink and Henrik Stenson started their tournaments with rounds of 70. Masters champ Zach Johnson shot a 72. John Daly, who won the event in 1994, shot a 77 before withdrawing due to a sore shoulder.
