Almost 86 per cent of the total went to EU destinations, the most visited countries being the UK and Italy.
The largest proportion - 50 per cent - were passengers aged between 25 and 44, followed by those in the 45 to 64 age bracket who accounted for 35.9 per cent of the total.
In March, the number of Maltese residents departing by air and sea were estimated at 19,333. This means an increase of 13 per cent over the same month last year.
Of these, 92.3 per cent travelled by air and 16,853 travelled to EU destinations, once again the most popular countries being Italy and the UK.
