Press Release Body = The secret and shockingly unconventional love of Alice Glass for Elsbeth Hobbs is shattered by the death of Luke Denby, RAF pilot and former seducer of Elsbeth. Stricken by conscience, Elsbeth leaves the Dales village of Howbeck to serve as a wren. Distraught at losing her, Alice turns to stalwart admirer, Davy Brown, a pacifist who now works in York as a policeman. He helps to find her work in the city, and the two share the dangers of the Baedeker raid which brought destruction and death in April 1942. However, Alice\'s honesty ultimately forces her to acknowledge the strength of her own nature and so begins another chapter in this engrossing novel.
