Press Release Summary = Israel-style 'shuk' set for August 30 in Albany
Press Release Body = ALBANY, N.Y.-Fresh local produce, gourmet baked goods and a variety of Israeli products and crafts will be among the centerpieces of a 'shuk'-an outdoor market resembling those found in Israel and throughout the Middle East-to be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 30.
The event, which is being presented by The Israel Center, a branch of Jewish Educational Resources of New York (JERNY), will also mark the introduction of JERNY's two newest "shlichim" (or, emissaries from Israel) to the Capital Region community. The women will remain in the region for the next year, working with Jewish organizations and schools as a key part of JERNY's multi-faceted educational program, according to Rabbi Yaakov Kellman, JERNY's executive director.
"It's appropriate that one of the first experiences Tehila Schaefer and Tamar Aziz will have in Albany will be to meet the community in a setting that's very much like home," Kellman said.
"To a great degree, they will represent Israel to the hundreds of people they come to know in classrooms and synagogues throughout the Capital Region, where they'll carry out some of the most important work JERNY can do in connecting the Jewish community to Israel."
Admission to the shuk is free and open to the public, and a variety of products will be available for purchase. The market will be held on the grounds of The Israel Center, located at 199 New Scotland Avenue, across the street from Sage College where New Scotland meets Lake and Woodlawn Avenues.
In addition to the chance to meet the newly-arrived emissaries and to experience the ambience of an Israel marketplace, the shuk will also feature a range of attractions from Israeli crafts and artwork to organic produce and spices provided by the Honest Weight Food Coop and artisan breads by Bread Alone Bakery from Boiceville. Visitors can also experience a free taste of Israel with a food sampler including hummus and pita.
Artisans such as Ora Sperber and Jeffrey Cohen will offer their artwork, and both The Israel Resource Center and The Israel Education Center, two JERNY branches, will be on hand with extensive information about both their own offerings and material about Israel.
