Press Release Body = (Appleton, Wisconsin) A psychologist and author has launched a website, www.therapytriangle.com, dedicated to informing and empowering psychotherapy clients so they can make their treatment a lasting success. On the website, Dr. Rob Burkham offers insights about how therapy works (and sometimes doesn't work) drawn from his thirty years of experience. Visitors to the site can click on, "Ask Dr. B", type in a question, and have Dr. Burkham's answer posted on the site. They can also receive confidential email counseling with Dr. Burkham and order copies of his book, The Therapy Triangle: Empowering You with the Knowledge to Heal (Right Mind Publishing, 2005).
"Every year, more than 10 million Americans begin mental health counseling," Dr. Burkham writes, "but few have any solid information about how therapy can make a positive difference in their lives. Because not all therapists are highly skilled and some are even destructive, clients need a clear understanding of how therapy works so they don't spend months or even years in unproductive counseling."
Because therapy is expensive and its use is being increasingly rationed by managed care, Dr. Burkham believes that an informed and empowered client will benefit more from the limited number of sessions available to them.
The website and the book present a unique perspective on psychotherapy. While counseling is usually viewed as an isolated relationship between therapist and client, Dr. Burkham sees "the therapist-client relationship as part of a triangle of relationships which includes the client's family. It is crucial to the success of treatment that both client and therapist understand and honor the power of the client's connections with their families. If both client and therapist handle this triangle of relationships well, the client can make the lasting changes they want."
Dr. Marsha Levy-Warren, New York psychoanalyst and author, says, "Dr. Burkham's language is clear and his knowledge unmistakable. I would recommend The Therapy Triangle highly to anyone contemplating psychotherapy."
Jenny Brown, Faculty Member and Therapist at the Family Therapy Institute of Sydney, Australia writes, "What a surprising read The Therapy Triangle turned out to be! It provides a unique, jargon-free description of clients' dilemmas in seeking effective therapy."
A therapy client recently wrote on the Ask Dr. B page of the website, "Your book was riveting for me. I understand so much more and will make better choices in my next therapist." Another client said, "It should be mandatory reading for anyone who decides to pursue therapy past the initial stage of dealing with the crisis that brought them to therapy."
