Press Release Body = Water World Swim, located in San Francisco, California is gearing up for the 5th Annual Alcatraz100 "Swim of the Centurions", which will take place on September 2, 2007.
From Alcatraz to the Aquatic Park in the San Francisco Bay, the 1.25 mile swim has become world-renown and is projected to have 400-450 participants competing in four events. A percentage of the proceeds go to the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic (www.charlottmaxwell.org), which is a California state-licensed health clinic that provides free complementary alternative medical treatments to low-income women with cancer, and National Parks Services (http://www.nps.gov/state/ca/), which helps communities across America preserve and enhance important local heritage and close-to-home recreational opportunities.
Unfortunately, the Bay Bridge will be closed during this event. If you live or will be staying in the North and East Bay, give yourself extra time to get there. This work will impact traffic coming into and going out of San Francisco and Oakland over the long weekend.
This is the swim that Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers, Clarence and John, attempted in their successful escape of Alcatraz prison on June 11, 1962. Thirty-nine years later, on June 11, 2001, Pedro Ordenes and Gary Emich became the first people ever to complete the Alcatraz Swim 100 times. They decided to share this goal with all the swimming community around the world and start the Alcatraz 100 Club, which consists of hundreds of individuals.
