Press Release Body: Columbia University International Relations Forum invites the undergraduate and graduate student body to a speech, Q&A session, and reception with Permanent Representative to the United Nations from Iraq, HIS EXCELLENCY AMBASSADOR HAMID AL-BAYATI, at LERNER CINEMA on Tuesday NOVEMBER 27th at 7pm. The primary subject will be the WAR IN IRAQ, and the challenges facing Iraq in the 21st century.
Dr. Hamid Al-Bayati was appointed Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations in April 2006. He worked as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for the department of Political Affairs and Bilateral Relations from 2004 to 2006. During the same period, he headed the Iraqi Center for Strategic Studies. Dr. Al-Bayati has also made significant progress as Iraq?s Permanent Representative and was elected as Chair of the United Nations? Third Committee related to Social, Economic, and Human Rights. Dr. Al-Bayati also participated in Iraq?s opposition conference held in Beirut in 1991 and the Salah Al Din Conference in 1992. He became a member of the Executive Council of the Iraqi National Congress (INC). Ambassador Al-Bayati was also part of the six-member delegation for Iraqi opposition, which was invited to Washington in August 2002 to meet with U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney and other officials of the U.S. Administration.
Dr. Al-Bayati obtained a Bachelors degree from Baghdad University, a Masters degree from Cairo University, and a PhD in Politics from Manchester University, England. He has written and published many books and research papers in both Arabic and English including: The Secret of February 8, 1963 Coup, The Shiite of Iraq, The Bloody History of Saddam Hussein Al Takriti, The Secret of July 17, 1968 Coup, The Terrorism Game, Fall of the Evil, Terrorism in Iraq, The Iraqi Constitution, and The Federalism.
Hamid Al Bayati is the third Permanent Representative to the United Nations from a Middle Eastern Country to speak at Columbia University under the auspices of The Columbia University International Relations Forum Speaker Series (Formerly the Towards Reconciliation Speaker Series). He is preceded by Javid Zareef, Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations for the Islamic Republic of Iran and Imad Moustapha, Permanent Representative from The Syrian Arab Republic.
Columbia University International Relations Forum takes great pride in inviting scholars, journalists, diplomats, and government officials to Columbia University to engage in Q&A sessions directly with students, and to present their respective viewpoints in an academic environment. Through such a forum, we strive to give the Columbia University student base an opportunity to hear first hand the views of prominent political leaders and to come to their own conclusions about matter that will be of increasing importance in the future.
