Press Release Body: Deerfield Beach, FL, March 13, 2008 -- The producers of Today's Family are pleased to announce that New Leaders for New Schools will be featured in an upcoming episode as part of the show's \"Models of Excellence\" series on \"Touching Hearts Changing Lives\".
Hearts are being touched and lives are being changed, as New Leaders for New Schools works to ensure high academic achievement for children across America's urban public schools.
Conceived in 2000, New Leaders for New Schools\' mission is to ensure high academic achievement for every student by attracting and preparing outstanding leaders and supporting the performance of the urban public schools they lead at scale. Since its inception, it has selected and trained more than 430 passionate and results-focused individuals, from within education, as well as former educators, to become urban public school principals committed to achieving success for every child in their schools.
A primary goal of the organization is that schools led by New Leaders principals for at least five years have 90-100 percent of students achieve proficiency in core academic subjects and be on track to graduate from high school ready for college, careers, and citizenship. Currently, New Leaders for New Schools is on track to provide 25 percent of the new urban principals needed across the U.S. by 2014. They recently released a report, "Defining an Urban Principalship to Drive Dramatic Achievement Gains", which draws findings from an analysis of dozens of schools selected to compare low-income schools making dramatic achievement gains with those making incremental gains; the schools highlighted include five low-income public schools led by New Leaders principals that were the single most improved or highest achieving schools in their cities -- including the most-improved public schools in the entire states of Illinois and California.
"It is clear that great schools are led by great principals," says Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Jonathan Schnur. "Our program is designed to effectively prepare and support individuals who have an unyielding belief in the potential of all children to achieve academically, a record of success in leading adults, and demonstrated instructional knowledge with a minimum of two years of teaching experience in a K-12 setting."
New Leaders receives support from the nation\'s leading education philanthropists including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, The Broad Foundation, The New Schools Venture Fund, New Profit, Inc., The Walton Family Foundation, The Boeing Company, and FedEx. New Leaders for New Schools also receives support from the U.S. Department of Education.
The organization has partnerships in Baltimore, California's Bay Area, Chicago, Memphis, Milwaukee, New Orleans, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Prince George's County.
