May 7, 2008, Pasadena, Maryland: It's no secret that the Green movement has arrived:
hybrid gas/electric cars, organic food stores and supermarket sections,
chemical-free everything from dish detergent to dog food. But solar energy for the
home? Here in Anne Arundel County..how cost-effective is it really?
How about half-price, or even free! According to Roger Perry, owner of Solar Energy
Services, Inc. and a 30-year solar industry veteran, a family of four living in
Maryland would normally pay around $8000 for a solar domestic hot water system.
Currently, little more than half of this is paid for by combined financial
incentives from the State of Maryland and the federal government. Perry states,
"This solar system would provide approximately 75% of a family's annual hot water
and pay for itself in as little as 5 - 7 years."
Furthermore, Anne Arundel County residents can credit the remaining balance towards
their Property Tax Bill. This basically translates to a free solar hot water system
for hundreds of homes in Anne Arundel County.
When it comes to solar energy systems, there are basically two types for the
residence: thermal (hot water and heating), and P.V. (solar electric). P.V. is an
extremely long-term investment that can take a lifetime to pay for itself. However,
solar domestic hot water is a zero-risk, money-back-guaranteed carbon-free step on
the way to energy independency.
