About Hasso-Plattner-Institute Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) is a unique university institute:
* It is the first and, to date, the only university institute that depends entirely on private funding.
* It is the only institute offering a degree in »IT-Systems Engineering« – a hands-on alternative to traditional computer science courses.
* Its »School of Design Thinking« offers students from all departments an innovative additional course in creative developing.
The HPI was founded in 1998 and is today considered to be one of the »rising stars in the field of information technology« (Karriere magazine, June 2006), scoring highly in recent rankings. For example, the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE) rated HPI degree courses alongside those of leading universities as some of the best in the country for four of the five most important assessment criteria (study environment, supervision, IT infrastructure and research funding). The German federal government acknowledged the achievements of the Hasso Plattner Institute and its founder by holding its first national IT summit at HPI in December 2006. The Institute works with internationally renowned seats of learning such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University , which is also home to the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, an affiliate of the institute in Potsdam.
A public-private partnership The HPI was founded by the non-profit »Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering», with the aim of establishing it as a public-private partnership. The Brandenburg state government contributed by providing the site for the Institute, a prime location next to the Griebnitzsee lake in Potsdam-Babelsberg. When it was founded, the academic sponsor committed more than €50 million of its own capital to the Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering to fund the running of the Institute over a 20-year period. Since then, the founder has quadrupled its financial pledge, bringing its total contribution to more than €200 million.
