Press Release Body: Attorney Trey Cox of Lynn Tillotson Pinker & Cox Discusses Legal Challenges for Wind Industry in Texas
SWEETWATER, Texas - Wind Law III, a wind energy symposium outlining the challenges and opportunities facing the booming domestic wind energy industry in Texas and across the country, is scheduled to begin Thursday, June 19, in Sweetwater, Texas. Accomplished wind energy attorney Trey Cox, a partner in the Dallas law firm Lynn Tillotson Pinker & Cox, will be a featured speaker, discussing the legal hurdles for wind energy providers in Texas during the two-day event.
The symposium sponsored by the Texas Tech University School of Law, West Texas Wind Energy Consortium and American Wind Energy Association is taking place on the campus of Texas State Technical College. Sweetwater represents the epicenter of the U.S. wind energy industry and is home to the most-active area of wind energy development in the world. Approximately 40 miles west of Abilene, the region boasts turbines capable of generating 4,000 megawatts of electricity and includes the four largest wind farms in the United States, two of which represent the top wind developments in the world.
"The wind industry is on pace to grow more than 20 percent this year and is maturing into an energy sector that can help address concerns about rising oil and gas prices," says Mr. Cox. "Wind Law III offers players at all levels in this industry an opportunity to share knowledge about promoting the great promise of this immense untapped resource."
Mr. Cox handles complex commercial litigation for a wide range of business clients. His work in the wind energy industry has established Mr. Cox as an authority on legal issues surrounding wind farm development. In December 2006, he successfully defended the world's largest wind farm, FPL Energy's Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center, against a legal challenge filed by nearby landowners. The Horse Hollow case marked the first jury verdict in Texas history where an energy provider prevailed in a legal challenge to a wind farm.
Mr. Cox and other Wind Law III presenters will outline emerging issues in the industry, including the latest developments in legislation and regulatory policy, as well trends in turbine engineering and environmental issues in wind project development.
"Texas is the leading producer of wind energy in the U.S. and is a major player on the worldwide level," Mr. Cox says. "It's important for Texas to remain at the forefront of wind energy research and development issues, and events like Wind Law III offer a way for the industry to achieve those goals."
