Zipeg is a free, software application for Mac OS X (Universal binaries) and Windows. With Zipeg open archives without unzipping them, view files and folders within archive. Nearly 18 months after its first release in 2006 Zipeg remains the most comprehensive unzipping, unpacking, extracting and previewing utility on both Macintosh and Windows platforms. It is Zipeg that first fully illuminated the ubiquitous role archiving technology played in the development of photography exchange.
Zipeg operates in background staring pre-extract files from your archive before you even made up your mind and make you choice. This minimizes time you anxiously stare at progress bar waiting for your files to be extracted.
Zipeg features hand-written code for EXIF thumbnail extraction from JPEG pictures and beyond, Zipeg communicates with other system utilities like image preview with incredible breadth, depth and insight, and sets the standard to which all subsequent archive utilities have been held.
It supports multitude of file formats, including ZIP, TAR, RAR, GZIP, ISO, and a whole host of others. You can look inside of archives without unpacking them, so you can verify that you\'ve got the right one, before expanding it onto your system. Not only do you get a chance to examine the file list, but you can even open individual files in your applications - look at an image in Preview, for example.
Unlike many archive tools, Zipeg keeps track of Mac-only meta-data, such as resource forks, file permissions, and Finder attributes. You won\'t lose anything by archiving your Mac files. This version of Zipeg also preserves execute permissions in TGZ (also known as TAR GZIP archives) popular for Linux and X-Window based applications like Eclipse and many others.
Zipeg supports new AES strong encryption standards for both WinRar and WinZip produced archive files.
Zipeg automatically detects file names in national code pages and correctly converts them to Unicode. Files named in your native tongue will not be garbled. (http://zipeg.com/zipeg.2.0.ss/zipeg_filenames_compare.png)
Zipeg is implemented in secure platform agnostic Java programming language - which makes it immune to many modern security threats.
Zipeg is a very small download (mere 1.2MB for Windows and 2.3MB for Macintosh).
Zipeg version 2.4 address variety of stability and compatibility issues for OS Leopard and Windows Vista. It accumulates multiple update and improvements in application performance and stability.
