Press Release Body = Dallas community leader Candy Marcum has formally kicked off her campaign to represent District 14 on the Dallas City Council. Candy Marcum has launched her campaign with a series of neighborhood coffees and fundraisers, opened her campaign office, hired experienced campaign staff, and initiated a direct mail and email campaign. Marcum is a former appointee to the City of Dallas Board Adjustment and previously served as chairperson of the city's Human Services Commission.

Marcum comments, “I’m ready to serve the people of District 14 on the Dallas City Council to make Dallas a better place to live, work, and raise a family. Serving the community has long been a driving force in my life, and my life-long commitment has produced important results as I have fought for health and social services, human rights, business opportunities, and neighborhood beautification.”

Marcum is noted for her work in Dallas and at Dallas City Hall, where she has been appointed to the Human Service Commission and the Board of Adjustment. Marcum was appointed by two Dallas Mayors to serve as the Chairperson of the Human Services Commission. As a Board of Adjustment member, Marcum served on a hearing panel reviewing variations to the development code and appeals from building official decisions. She has served Dallas City Hall for almost a decade.

Marcum is deeply committed to neighborhood issues and her involvement includes the Triangle of Oak Lawn Landmark Task Force, the Oak Lawn Committee, City of Dallas Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, Dallas Police Officer of the Month panel,
Advisory Committee of the Wilkinson Center, Past Co-Chair of the Preservation Dallas Annual Preservation Awards, and the Downtown Dallas Rotary Club.

On a national level, Marcum is the former co-chair of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) board of directors, the nation's largest gay advocacy organization. During Marcum’s tenure, the organization experienced tremendous growth in both budget and membership. During that period, the organization expanded its board to increase
representation, produced Equality Rocks concert, implemented a strategic plan and initiated the development of HRC’s new building in Washington, D.C. Marcum has been involved in Dallas as one of the co-founders of Leadership Lambda and Oak Lawn Community Services. She is also the past co-chair of the Dallas Fort Worth Federal Club.

Candy Marcum is a longtime resident of District 14, which includes Oak Lawn, Uptown, Downtown, Bluffview, Devonshire, Northpark/Love Field, Old East Dallas, Bryan Place, M-Streets, Hollywood Heights/Santa Monica, Lakewood Heights, and
Gastonwood/Coronado. Candy notes, “Dallas' District 14 is home to beautiful, exciting and diverse neighborhoods. We have experienced unprecedented growth and progress in the thirty years since I moved here and became active in the community. But as beautiful as Dallas is, we can do even better.”

Candy Marcum is a psychotherapist with a specialization in marriage, family, and chemical dependency counseling. She completed a Bachelor’s degree from Texas
Christian University and a Master’s degree from University of North Texas. Candy is a frequent presenter and speaker for the American and Texas Associations of Marriage
and Family Therapy, Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Texas Counseling Association, and the SMU Annual Women’s Symposium. Marcum, who has been in private
practice and a business owner for more than twenty years, is a former appointee and member of the U.S. Small Business Administration National Advisory Council.

The May 7, 2005 election for the District 14 seat on the Dallas City Council is open due to term limits. “This is an open seat, and therefore, there will be a full field of candidates. I have heard that there might be nine individuals who may run; however, we will not know until the filing deadline. What separates me from the field of possible candidates is the length of time I’ve lived and owned a business in District 14 and the number of years I’ve served on commissions and boards for the
City of Dallas. In fact, I’ve served on City of Dallas boards and commissions longer than many of my opponents have lived in the district, “ said Marcum.

“I look forward to meeting and working with residents throughout District 14,” said Marcum who has opened a storefront campaign headquarters at One Turtle Creek Plaza in Dallas and launched a website at http://www.candymarcum.com. Marcum comments, “It has been an honor to secure support from all sections of the district and be invited to neighborhood meetings and events, I look forward to an on-going dialogue with residents of District. I want to know how residents envision a stronger, greater Dallas and what the Dallas City Council needs to do to make that happen.”
