Leading retailers slash prices and the impending VAT rise causes shoppers to rush out to grab bargains – announces money saving website

20 January 2011 – According to the money saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk, sales have rocketed over the festive period and into January for big-ticket items, as consumers tried to get their spending out of the way before the VAT rise. Sales at the start of January have seen a year on year increase of almost 500%.

The main items which have been being bought are holidays, white goods, health & fitness memberships, computers and televisions. This is shown in the average sales ticket price being up by 39% and shows that consumers do not want to miss their chance before the VAT rise.

December sales were up by 600% compared to 2010 and the popularity of voucher codes has also increased, showing that shoppers hunt around for the best prices for gifts, food and drink and experiences. Coupled with Christmas savings of up to 70% from some retailers, sales in the UK have rocketed.

DiscountVouchers.co.uk director Mr Simon Terry comment on the latest sales patterns: “With huge savings from retailers over the festive period and the impending VAT increase, there has been a huge spike in sales as people are buying their high-cost goods at the start of the year. The massive increase in sales has increased our own sales, as people in the UK are more likely to search around for the best deals before spending any more proving that money saving websites such as ours are very important.”

“Paying full price for goods is no longer needed as people now recognise that shopping around and negotiating prices means that they can get discounts from not only small retailers but large chains too.”

The current offers from DiscountVouchers.co.uk, despite the VAT increase, still allow January sales to rise with great offers such as Zizzi main courses have 50% off; get up to 70% off video games; up to 60% off DVD & Blu-rays at Amazon; Hilton Hotels weekend breaks have up to 50% off; House of Fraser has up to 70% off; and kids go free and savings of up to £200 for couples at First Choice.

Simon added, “Retailers were forced to cut prices as people in December were tightening their belts and the terrible British weather stopped shoppers going out. This had an amazing effect on sales both for us and the retailers, as savings of 50% could be had, and in some cases even 70% off.”

DiscountVouchers.co.uk is one of the UK's top websites for saving money and has thousands of deals and exclusive offers from well-known high-street retailers and big brand names such as Boden, Travelodge, Marks & Spencer, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, First Choice, Lastminute.com and many more.
