A few months after “Black Friday”, the US government is under increasing pressure to legalize the playing of poker on the web.
The United States is now facing a lot of pressure to allow its residents to play poker online as bills are continually being pushed by several lawmakers. Businesses like Digital Gaming, one of the premier providers of gaming software in the US, also have expressed their interest in the legalization of online poker in the country. PlayPokerOnline.com reveals more information on the issue surrounding the legalization of the game in the US.
The latest political heavyweights to press for legalization of poker in the US include US. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, and co-sponsor Shelley Berkeley. Barton's bill, unlike the previous ones, would have regulations issued by the United States Department of Commerce. The bill also gave individual states the power to either let players from that state play the game or block them. The online poker industry, it is alleged, earned revenue of an estimated $6 billion a year, with potential tax revenue of above $250 million for the USA , a fact that many lawmakers in the country are aware of.
There has also been considerable opposition to the bill, notably from Senator Dianne Feinstein, who stated that internet gambling, besides being enabling minors to play poker online, is subject to fraudulent activities and is used to evade gambling laws of the state. In reply to such opposition, Richard Bronson, former executive of Las Vegas Casino and founder of Digital Gaming, has stated that the future of gaming is online, but the problem is how to regulate the industry.
Digital gaming offers online gaming sites with a complete package which includes not just the software but also advertising, marketing, licensing and legal services. The software is enabled with the technology to verify the age and location of a player so that minor gambling is curbed.
Bronson has also stated that he and Richard Baskin, his partner, have already invested over $3 million in the projected and they have sourced another $3 million through external funds. The company is gearing itself up to serve the rising market when online gambling is finally legalized in the US, he said. He, however, does not feel that the bill will be passed anytime until 2012. He also said that legalization of gambling at the state level would be of advantage to the state lotteries and commercial casinos.
