Body = (February 2005) — Christine Rohlic Ojeda’s first
book, The Enchanted Storm, is a delightful fantasy that uses all
of the classic motifs of the traditional fairy tale in new and charming
ways. All the familiar elements find a place in this story—quests,
tests, charms, potions, elves, pixies, gnomes, dragons and transformed
humans. The characters, language and themes all suit the age level
perfectly.
The author captures
the apparently arbitrary spirit of the fairy tale world. To children,
life-changing events can occur quite unexpectedly. The Enchanted
Storm embraces that unexpectedness, showing the main characters
accepting and rising above
everything that happens to them. Through their journey, Jimmy and
Betsy learn universal childhood lessons: to value friendship, to
look beyond appearances and to face their fears.
The adults in
Jimmy and Betsy’s world make up a very positive part of their
team. The villains are villainous, but not terrifying and everyone
finds redemption. Charming illustrations head each chapter. The
characters, language and themes all
suit the age level perfectly. The Enchanted Storm will satisfy young
readers reading on their own or as a read-aloud story.
