The Nutcracker has a special place at the heart of the Royal Opera House; it was this production, starring Darcey Bussell as the Sugar Plum Fairy, which was chosen as the first full-length ballet to be performed by the Royal Ballet when the venue re-opened its doors in December 1999 following a two-year closure and a £214 million renovation project.
