Body =
[Mariposa, California, March -- 2005.] Petey the Therapy Dog, a
mixed breed pet with some Border Collie and Pointer heritage, is
set for his first book signing event at the Sierra Artist's Gallery
in historic downtown Mariposa on April 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. His paw
print will be affixed to "Petey's Pawbook of Doggone Good Advice",
for anyone buying a copy, or for those who wish to bring in previously
purchased editions.
Writer Rochelle
Frank and photographer Linda Gast assisted with the book's production.
Both will be on hand to help out with the signing. Petey earned
his "Therapy Dog" certification four years ago by successfully
passing a strict set of tests for obedience and temperament. He
is qualified to visit
hospitals and care facilities, which he does on a regular basis.
Petey's friends
say that his "common scents" advice puts insecure, frightened
or misunderstood pets at ease. Addressing animal apprehensions about,
medical
procedures, getting basic needs met, and more, his good natured
answers bring a smile to owners and help them see things from a
pet perspective.
"Since
he is a therapist, we decided he was also qualified to give advice
to other pets," says Gast who is also Petey's owner. "Rochelle,
came up with the question and answer format when we ran a 'Dear
Petey' column in the local paper as a way to remind pet owners about
pet care subjects with a humorous twist." Gast has taken hundreds
of photos of adoptable shelter animals, and some of the appealing
pet
portraits have been incorporated into Petey's book.
Despite all
of their insecurities, and difficulties with inter-species communication,--according
to Petey's Pawbook-- humans really do make lovable and desirable
companions for dogs and cats.
Frank, who
has written humor pieces and newspaper feature articles took the
challenge seriously. "I never thought I would become a ghost
writer for a dog," she says,"but Petey's paws are just
too big to use a keyboard. "
The small cooperative
art gallery is home to the work of artists crafters and photographers
who represent a sample of the artistic talents residing in the hills
of the historic gold rush town. Regular exhibits and special receptions
are an
ongoing attraction, at the gallery, but Sierra Artist Gallery President
Sue Rudd says that she does not recall a previous canine book signing
. This is Petey's first book.
Though the
refreshments will include take-along treats for dogs, people are
asked to leave their pets at home for this event. Petey will be
making another appearance at the Mariposa County fairgrounds in
June at the Mountain Mutt show when all dogs will be invited.
Petey's helpers
became friends while working as free-lancers for a regional newspaper.
In the past year they collaborated on their first children's book
"So What.Saw-Whet?" based on a series of Gast's photos
of a tiny bold-hearted owl. Both
books will be available at the gallery event. Sierra Artist-Mariposa
Gallery is located at Hwy. 140 and 6th St., Mariposa, CA
