Press Release Summary = Vierling Weatherman brings images from satellites directly
to the PC
Press Release Body = Ebermannstadt, July 27, 2005. Vierling now offers the world’s
first complete weather satellite station for everybody. The Vierling Weatherman
consists of a satellite receiver, an aerial and Windows-based software. The system
delivers up-to-date weather photographs approximately every four hours. This makes
the Weatherman ideal for individuals wishing to observe the weather in holiday
regions or to equip their caravans or boats with an on-board weather stations. The
system can also be integrated in computer science, electronics and geography
projects at schools and universities. The weather satellite station can be ordered
in Germany from the current Conrad Electronic catalogue for 499 euros. The
development of further sales channels is in progress.
Images from U.S. satellites
The Weatherman allows the user to receive the APT (Automatic Picture Transmission)
signals from satellites of the U.S. National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) and to display them as color or black/white images. The NOAA weather
satellites orbit the earth at a height of more than 800 kilometers and deliver
images with a resolution of about four kilometers. The Weatherman usually receives
signals from four different satellites. Thus, up-to-date photographs are available
about every four hours.
More than just fascinating images
No matter where the Weatherman is used on earth, it always delivers the weather
images of this location with a visible reception range of approximately 3,000 by
6,000 kilometers. The photographs also include ground, cloud and water temperatures.“An inexpensive software registration will additionally activate country borders,
distance meters and a system of coordinates”, explains Wolfgang Baschant, the
responsible product manager at Vierling. “With these features, the system provides
much more than just fascinating views from space. Even laypeople will be able to
determine the upcoming development of weather fronts hours in advance.”
Electronics trainees involved
Baschant is particularly happy that his project has been integrated into the
training program for the currently eight electronics trainees at Vierling: “It is
very important to us that all of our trainees here at Vierling quickly get
acquainted with projects that are based on actual use. In the Weatherman project for
example, the trainees have participated in circuit tests and aerial assembly and
have gained insight into development, calculation and purchasing. Participation in
real projects helps our trainees to get a general idea of neighboring fields. This
goes far beyond the common training goals and can lay the foundations for their
further personal development at Vierling.”
System requirements for PC or Laptop:
- Pentium 166 or higher
- Windows XX or higher
- At least 150 MB of free hard disk space
