Basically some smart guy realized one day that if you drop some Mentos lollies into a bottle of diet coke, coke shoots out of the bottle, flies meters into the air, lands on the ground and everybody says ooo, ahhh and is profoundly entertained.
This smart guy told his friend, who in turn likely told his 50 friends who told their 50 friends and well... you know what happens next.

In http://www.video.google.com there are 10 new videos added daily to the growing list of 280 videos submitted currently. Additionally listed in the top 100 videos in video.google.com there is always one diet coke Mentos video listed in the top Ten.
How and why this started.
Steve Splanger of stevespanglerscience.com states he has done this experiment over one thousand times on on television, talk shows, science conventions, teacher associations. Nobody really knows how or where this started. Though 2 guys from eepybird.com have gone to a lot of trouble to create a fascinating and entertaining video using over 100 2 liter bottles of diet coke to produce a 2 minute video, from which some websites state have earned them over $15,000. This is what has most likely inspired many amateur video producers to do similar.
Since it is so inexpensive these days to produce a video and store it on the internet at places like youtube.com and video.google.com . Additionally the materials are very inexpensive.
This is a very safe experiment, great for kids to experiment with at little cost, though as seen from the many videos I\'ve watched, they are all having a great time.
What\'s needed:
1. Video camera. Any video camera can be used, that can be connected to your computer. Handy cam, digital camera with video option. Cell phone with video option.
2. Internet connection of course. Later in the process, this will be used to get your diet coke and Mentos videos onto the internet so that you can share the laughs with all your friends.
3. Bottles of Diet Coke.
4. Packets of Mentos.
5. Website to upload your videos to , to share with the world.. video.google.com is the best.. its free and easy to use.
But the real ramifications of this little experiment are far further reaching than first perceived. Along with being a bit of fun, the experiment is now helping younger children and teenagers appreciate science again. As they are beginning to discover, away from the monotony of the school labs there is a world of science that is fun and exciting.
