Press Release Summary = The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery is warning consumers that many medical spas are doing cosmetic procedures such as laser hair removal without a fully trained physician supervising the procedure. This is leading to horror stories of severe injuries to patients.
Press Release Body = No woman wants to be the bearded lady and what man wants a shag carpet on his back or chest? Laser hair removal is the easiest and least painful way for hair removal for men and women in this day and age. \"Medical spas,\" advertise laser hair removal, laser cellulite reduction, laser skin tightening, laser acne treatment, and PhotoRejuvenation as few of the \"services\" they offer. Baby Boomers and millions of others are flocking to these medical spas to improve their looks, self esteem, and help turn back the clock with promises of looking years younger. But where are the doctors and trained medical professionals in these so-called medical spas? What happens when a patient is burned or has a severe reaction to the laser treatments? The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) is issuing a warning to consumers that medical procedures such as laser hair removal should only be performed by a fully qualified physician or under the direct supervision of a physician. This warning came after a series of horror stories reported to the ASDS. In one example, a 36-year-old woman underwent laser hair removal treatment at a local day spa that resulted in second-degree burns and checkerboard-like scars on her legs and underarms, according to the ASDS. Allowing untrained or under trained technicians to use sophisticated lasers is like allowing a 5-year-old to point a loaded gun at a patient--the 5-year-old may have seen someone use the gun before, but doesn\'t know how to use it or the consequences that could result from firing it. Spa Med in St. Louis Park, Minnesota is a renowned medical spa, with multiple physicians, registered nurses, and other certified medical professionals in charge of patient care for its international client base. Dr. Sidney Kass, owner of the prestigious medical spa, is a board-certified physician and has been practicing medicine nearly 30 years, including over 15 years of trauma and critical care experience. Since 1993, Dr. Kass\'s medical spa called \"Spa Med\" has performed more than 200,000 procedures on over 11,000 patients. \"Many medical spas or day spas advertise \'medical supervision,\' yet you cannot meet or almost ever speak to the physician because it\'s basically window dressing or a total lie,\" Dr. Kass said. \"We are the only medical spa in the country that I know of that has at least 1-2 trauma trained doctors and 1-2 registered nurses on site 6 days a week for our patient\'s complete safety,\" Dr. Kass states. Spa Med uses a total of nine different lasers that are specialized for each treatment procedure, unlike other medical spas that only use one or two lasers for all services they offer. Patients have a choice to either go to a McDonald\'s type spa to trust with there skin and body, or a 5 star restaurant type service as they always receive with Spa Med. Dr. Sidney Kass is the founder of the Minnesota based medical spa \"Spa Med\" with locations in St. Louis Park and Woodbury, MN. Dr. Kass is a board-certified anesthesiologist, a phlebology specialist, and been practicing medicine for over 30 years. His medical spa practice is one of the largest and most highly acclaimed in the country, having performed over 200,000 procedures and helping over 11,000 patients from around North America since 1993.
