Today, I am joining the fight to end illiteracy in America.
Not since George Washington showed my image to Betsy Ross that gave her the idea of the design of the American flag and my \"I WANT YOU\" recruiting posters from World War I and World War II, have I felt a need to awaken this nation to band together to solve the national illiteracy crises.
Press Release Body = Today, I am joining the fight to end illiteracy in America.
Not since George Washington showed my image to Betsy Ross that gave her the idea of the design of the American flag and my \"I WANT YOU\" recruiting posters from World War I and World War II have I felt a need to awaken this nation to band together to solve the national illiteracy crises . Today, about 90 million Americans are functionally illiterate, that's an individual\'s ability to read, write, and speak in English.
My fight is not about more discussion, reading more books to children or more research; it's about implementation of the National Illiteracy Action ProjectT to solve the illiteracy problem.
First, illiteracy is a community problem, not a school educational problem, and needs to have a community literacy collaboration involved to help reach the families in the illiterate population. These community literacy collaborations must be comprised of the mayor's in each community, businesses, faith-based organizations, and other community partners.
Secondly, the purpose of community literacy collaborations are to provide literacy educational tutoring services to Title 1 K-12 students, to provide literacy educational tutoring services adult workforce participants and to encourage the creation of community collaborations to help increase the participation in a family literacy tutoring program can best be implemented with the community as a hub.
Additionally, the current literacy programs used by organizations, funded by the Workforce Investment Act and US Department of Ed. Adult Education must be changed and new tutoring programs that work based on the scientific research must be utilized.
Thirdly, the cost of illiteracy to businesses and taxpayers is estimated at $20 billion annually. The leaders in community literacy collaborations are motivated and benefited by the economic and community achievement of functionally literate students and adults.
Illiteracy starts at 4 years old, continues through grades K-12, and explodes with adults 16 years old and above in the workforce.
We need to start now.
