Press Release Body: Audiobook Seller Audible Sold to Amazon for Estimated 300 Million
Announced today Amazon to purchase Audible.com with final details to be completed in the second quarter of this year.
The last few years Audiobook downloads and sales have increased steadily.
In a recent study Independent research firm Lewis & Clark Research surveyed audiobook publishers during the summer of 2007, analyzing reported consumer sales data from 2006 and comparing current statistics against the previous year's findings. This year's survey showed a 6 percent increase over 2005 with audiobook sales now estimated at $923 million
Amazon.com Inc., seeking to expand its digital-content offerings, agreed to acquire audiobook seller Audible Inc. for about $280-300 million. Earlier in 2007, Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. said it acquired Brilliance Audio, a publisher of audiobooks.
It seems that Amazon knows something that perhaps may have previously escaped the attention of a few people.
Maybe it shouldn\'t be such a BIG surprize after all. Faster internet access, demand for mp3 players, the iphone, and a time crunched world are a just few factors driving this trend.
Marketing expert Seth Godin has previously said \"There are three types of people in the world, those that like audiobooks, those who don\'t, and those who have never tried them\"
It seems that more people are trying them and like them. It least Amazon thinks they will.
In addition to Amazon and other large retailers, there are many smaller sellers and sites with niche offerings. These sellers often have many of the same titles as there larger counter parts and prices comparable as well.
Audiobooks do offer benefits. They are portable, have the ability to convey emotion unlike written books, allow users to multi-task, make use off drive time, can be great learning tools, and enjoyed by a larger audience such as children, the blind, or the elderly.
