Press Release Summary: Shannon, Clare, 15th February 2008 - The Mayor of Clare today called for an end to unofficial strike action by air traffic controllers at Shannon Airport, which she said was having a detrimental effect on business in the Shannon area.
Press Release Body: Councillor Patricia McCarthy said that delays to some cargo operations at Shannon Airport, as result of the dispute, had caused significant difficulties for multinational companies in the Shannon Free Zone and wider region.
She said, "Representatives of the local business sector have informed me that the unofficial strike action has led to serious delays in vital cargo shipments from abroad reaching them. This is a wholly unacceptable situation considering that Shannon is still recovering from the loss of the strategically important Shannon-Heathrow service."
"I now call on air traffic controllers to end their unofficial action and allow for the utilisation of Industrial Relations procedures to resolve the issues in dispute\", added Mayor McCarthy.
