The earthquake struck on May 12, 2008 in central China's Sichuan province with a magnitude of 7.9. It lasted for a long period of several minutes and was felt from as far as Bangkok, Thailand to Taiwan. Within a 4 hour period, at least 7 more earthquakes of 4.0-6.0 magnitudes struck. The death toll is at nearly 100,000 with the figures expected to rise drastically. An estimation of one-third of the buildings in Wenchuan have collapsed, including a high school burying 900 8th and 9th grade students, 2 primary schools, and the county hospital.
