A Second Depression Ain't a Bad Idea

I know how it sounds on the surface. Of course, millions of Americans will lose
the jobs, businesses will fail, and millions of families will be rendered
homeless. The damage will be enormous, but a shifting of the American mindset
is vital to our survival.
Neither Obama nor McCain can trigger this catharsis. America has lost its
competitive edge and a depression is perhaps the best way to get it back.
Consider what good came out of the Great Depression.
Monumentally, the nation’s infrastructure was rebuilt. NRA, CCC, WPA helped to
solve the unemployment problem. Taking a page from the New Deal, some experts
say that 5 million jobs could be created with an energy reconstruction
program. Millions more jobs can be created by rebuilding the nation’s
crumbling infrastructure, more than replacing the 1.8 million manufacturing
job lost since China joined the WTO (World Trade Organization).
From the harsh lessons of the depression, America learned frugality. As a
result, America emerged a creditor nation. In sharp contrast, American is now a
debtor nation, borrowing $10 billion a week from the Chinese, to purchase
mostly foreign goods and to fill our foreign imports with foreign fuel. Those
Americans who survived the depression would never have been so utterly
irresponsible.
When I was in third grade, my teacher boasted that America was the wealthiest,
strongest and freest nation on earth. Well, freedom isn’t free, and national
security doesn’t come cheat. How long will our economic preeminence last if we
rely on our enemies for fuel and turn to our European and Asian competitors to
prop up the sagging dollar?
Unfortunately, the lessons of the past have been lost on the present leadership,
so we are doomed to repeat them. Thus, a depression is probably inevitable.
However, that might not be so bad considering that there’s a fate far worse.
If you’re wondering what could be worse than a depression, read my latest
novel, AMERICAN MESSIAH. It offers a culturally and technologically actuate,
although sometimes frightening, depiction of what might lay in wait around the
apocalyptic bend.
