Bolton-based delivery specialist Parcel2Go has been entrusted with making a parcel delivery that could result in the town gaining city status.
Following a ceremony at Bolton Town Hall, Parcel2Go took charge of the metropolitan borough council’s bid to have Bolton officially recognised as a city. The firm will ensure that the package is safely delivered to the Cabinet Office and placed in the hands of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
Mr Clegg will discuss the merits of all the bids received with cabinet members, before making a final recommendation to the Queen. Her Majesty will then grant the honour to one town next year as part of her official Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
Councils from across the UK including Reading, Guildford, Aberystwyth and Coleraine have all submitted bids through UK courier firms. And while there is no official benefit to being classed as a city, it’s accepted that the title will help to bring in investment and attract visitors.
The government said that each entry to the competition will be “considered ‘in the round’, on the merits of its contents” rather than on presentation.
Richard Mercer, Head of Marketing at Parcel2Go, said: "We’re extremely proud to have been chosen to handle this extra special parcel delivery which everyone hopes will be the first step towards Bolton achieving full city status.
"Parcel2Go is just one of a large number of businesses proud to call Bolton home. It’s a special place populated by people with a fierce determination when it comes to seeing things through, and I’m certain that the hard work invested by everyone involved in the bid will pay off."
Richard added: "The government has said it is looking for ‘vibrant, welcoming communities with interesting histories and distinct identities’ – everyone at Parcel2Go thinks Bolton fits this description perfectly."
