Smart Wi-Fi app boosts Orange UK's network coverage
Orange UK's recent adoption of a coverage app has proven popular with its customer base.
Orange UK, which merged with T-Mobile in 2010 to form Everything Everywhere, recently adopted Kineto's Smart Wi-Fi app, significantly improving network coverage for users. The app is powered by the telecom company's Signal Boost service.
The service enables users of certain handsets to automatically roam into various WiFi networks, resulting in improved indoor coverage. Eleven Orange handsets currently support the service, including devices from RIM, HTC, LG and Nokia.
While the app was initially adopted by Orange UK as a means of improving coverage for its customers, it has also proved useful in the realm of data traffic elimination in macro networks. And, of course, it has added a boost for customer satisfaction.
Paul Jevons, director of product marketing at Orange UK, stated: "[We have seen] genuine and material improvement in our customer satisfaction and our customer retention…Half of the people who have used [Signal Boost] say it is becoming an influence in their choice of handset," with many referring to it as "an essential feature".
As a result of the app's mounting popularity among Orange customers, the network plans to add to the list of supporting devices. Mr. Jevons confirmed that phones from Samsung, ZTE and Huawei will carry the app in the near future.
"Our [Signal Boost] customer base has increased by 50 per cent," Jevons commented.
"We are carrying millions of calls every month."
Orange UK has also expressed plans to extend the availability if the app to T-Mobile, under Everything Everywhere. "We plan to roll it out across the T-Mobile base in the U.K. later this year," Jevons said."
