From Friday 2nd to Tuesday 5th June 2012, over a million spectators are expected to take to the streets for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Diamond Jubilee to watch the Royal Barge carrying the Queen in full ceremonial regalia, the centrepiece of the flotilla procession featuring 1,000 boats and up to 40,000 people on the River Thames. This is just one of the events planned to celebrate the Queen's sixty years on the throne. There's an equine pageant at Windsor Castle , the Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday 3rd June when bunting and bouncy castles fill London's streets, and the Diamond Jubilee beacons which will be lit around Britain and the Commonwealth, including one – to be lit by the Queen – on top of the Tower of London.
Millions of people across the world will be watching when London hosts the Olympics but the Games are not just about sport, with them comes the culmination of the four-year Cultural Olympiad which ends with the London 2012 Festival, running from 21st June to 9th September 2012. Of the thousands of London 2012 Festival events taking place, highlights include blockbuster art exhibitions by David Hockney and Damien Hirst, opera by Damon Albarn, and the World Shakespeare Festival. The weekend before the Opening Ceremony there's the BT River of Music, a free music festival with six stages along the River Thames hosting bands like the Scissor Sisters and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
For those who love a bit of sparkle, there's Strictly Come Dancing Live (27th-29th January), and Torvill and Dean's Dancing on Ice (17th April), as well as the Steps reunion tour which arrives at The O2 on 19th and 20th April. There's more music with the Camden Crawl (4th-6th May), as well as headline gigs by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (26th February) and Rhianna (6th July) who is playing her only UK performance at the Wireless festival in Hyde Park, just one of the many summer music festivals that take place in the city's parks throughout June, July and August.
Annual favourites like Opera Holland Park , the Open Air Theatre at Regent's Park, and The Proms at the Albert Hall are back in 2012 with new and exciting programmes while the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy , the world's largest open submission contemporary art show, returns for its 244th year. Meanwhile, sports fans are spoilt for choice in 2012 – as well as watching the Olympic Games they can enjoy the Six Nations Rugby at Twickenham, the Carling Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, and the London Marathon which pitches the world's top runners against one another over the twenty-five mile course from Greenwich to The Mall by Buckingham Palace.
