Turner and Lorrain at National GalleryAn exploration of Turner's fascination with old master, Claude Lorrain, comes to the National between March and June
Released on: February 14, 2012, 9:44 am William Turner's favourite old master, and a man widely regarded as the father of European landscape painting, Frenchman Claude Lorrain, stars alongside Turner in a special exhibition at the National Gallery this spring, culminating in a keynote lecture from guest curator Ian Warrell on June 1st. Turner Inspired: In the Light of Claude explores the great man's admiration for a man described by Constable as ‘the most perfect landscape painter the world ever saw'. So great was Turner's affection for Lorrain, that when he donated Dido Building Carthage and Sun Rising Through Vapour to the National, it was on the condition that the works were hung between two Lorrain landscapes, The Seaport and The Mill. The new exhibition will display oils, watercolours and sketches from Lorrain, as well as telling the story of Turner's conditional bequest, and the role it played in the gallery's long, illustrious history. The final room of the exhibition is dedicated to the relationship between the two men's work, and how Turner has gone down in history, whilst Lorrain is largely forgotten outside art circles. The exhibition runs from March 14th to June 5th, with tickets starting at £6 for concessions, going up to £13.20 for adults. It's open daily from 10am to 6pm, and 10am to 9pm on Fridays. On June 1st, guest curator Ian Warrell gives a keynote lecture exploring the central themes of the exhibition and asking whether Turner was exceptional in his enthusiasm for Lorrain's work.
