Door2Tour.com's latest figures have revealed that despite a
slow start to the year with a revival in European breaks putting UK
getaways in the shadow, sales for its UK breaks are up for the year to
date compared to the same period last year, lead mainly by a Royal
resurgence.
The general rise in sales across Door2Tour coach holidays to UK destinations, which are up 4% compared to last year, is thought to be down
to a number of major events drawing attention to the UK, with the Queen's Diamond
Jubilee Celebrations in June at the forefront, closely followed by the summer
Olympics taking place in London, England. Other UK products to have
enjoyed increases in sales include events packages to the Royal Edinburgh Military
Tattoo, which are up 27% on last year and breaks to the capital itself, with
holidays to London up 63% on 2011.
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which the Princess Royal is currently Patron
of, is an annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces,
Commonwealth and International military bands and display teams. It celebrated its
own 60th anniversary in 2010, but this year's celebrations are set to be a
sparkling tribute to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen's
accession to the throne. It is thought that in addition to its Royal connection,
this year's special programme is helping to ensure this year's event is a
sell-out.
Kate Glanfield, Web Manager of Door2Tour.com, commented: "We've seen this week in
the news how the Royal Wedding has boosted visitor numbers to Westminster Abbey, and
it looks as though other UK destinations with royal connections have been touched by
the 'Royal Effect'."
While Diamond Jubilee related breaks have sold well for the concert, pageant, gala
and jubilee itself, Door2Tour.com has seen a rise in general breaks to London in
parallel with the events going on in the capital. A large proportion of the London
sales are for tours to Buckingham Palace itself and trips incorporating Windsor,
which is again famous for its Royal ties. The 63% rise in London breaks does not
include sales for London theatre breaks, which have also enjoyed a renaissance on
last year.
Kate concluded: "Although our booking patterns this year show that people are
starting to spend more on their holidays once more, UK breaks still remain an
affordable option for holidaymakers. It's little surprise that with so much going
on around the UK in 2012, people want to get aboard the Brit bandwagon and soak up
the special atmosphere. Views might be mixed as to whether to escape or embrace the
various events when they are actually on in the UK, but there's no doubt that this
year is indeed a great year to be British."
