July 11, 2012, 2:34 pm -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- London's famous Serpentine gallery is expanding this summer, with the opening of the new ‘Serpentine Sackler' space, just yards away from the original on the other side of the Serpentine Boating Lake.
The space has been renovated from a former gunpowder depot known as ‘The Magazine'. A Palladian style villa, it was built in 1805 to store arms for British military adventures. The new name comes from Theresa Sackler who, along with Dr. Mortimer, have funded the renovation.
The 900 sqmetre building is being restored by renowned architect ZahaHadid. The Sackler will be open every day from 10am-6pm, showing a mixture of contemporary art, architecture, dance, design, fashion, film, literature, music, performance and technology.
Both the Sackler and the Serpentine are located in Kensington Gardens, close to South Kensington underground. As part of a summer series of discounts on hotels in London, LondonTown.com is offering reduced rates on a number of rooms in the area.
