September 03, 2012, 8:44 am -- /EPR NETWORK/ -- The Mayor's Thames Festival, London's annual festival in honour of the city's main waterway, is to return on the weekend of September 8-9. This year's event will be bigger than ever, falling on the final days and closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.
The main event is the evening's procession, featuring a cavalcade of costumed entertainers. The procession, which runs alongside the river through the heart of the capital, culminates in a huge fireworks display. More than a ton of pyrotechnics will explode over the river from Blackfriars Bridge and two river barges, in a ten-minute spectacle that will serve as a final farewell to London's hugely successful Summer Olympics.
The procession runs from Westminster, past Tower Bridge and Victoria Embankment. Food stalls and other attractions will be lined up along the river to service what is expected to be a huge crowd. The Mayor's Thames Festival is a free event.
